Buying equipment for the first time can be a bit confusing so I have tried to simplifiy the ordering process

Firstly a bit of information about the three weopans, the weopan mainly used and regarded as the foremost  weopan is the foil it is important to have a good grounding in foil fencing before the Sabre and Epee can be considered.

The weapons used in fencing are the epee, foil and sabre.

Epee

epee drawing

The epee is the modern derivative of the original duelling sword, used in sport fencing. Epee - this is the french word for "sword". The weapon is similar to a foil, but has a stiffer, V-shaped blade, has a larger bell guard, and is heavier. The technique however, is somewhat different, as there are no rules regarding priority and right-of-way. In addition, the entire body area is a valid target area. The hits are made with the point of the blade only. The blade is a concave triangle in cross-section.

Lenght: 90 cm Weight: up to 770 gm.

Foil

Foils are derivatives of a thrusting small sword, and score a point by depressing a button on the end of the shaft to complete an electric circuit. The blade is very thin, with a blunted (or foiled) tip. Foil blades are flexible enough to bend upon striking an opponent, in order to prevent injuries. Hits are valid on the torso only. The blade cross-section is quadrangular.

Lenght: 89 cm Weight: up to 500 gm.

Sabre

Sabre is the weapon developed from the backsword of the Elizabethans and the heavy cavalry sabre. The sabre blade is V- shaped with the point folded over to form a button. This weapon is a cut and thrust type weapon. Target includes the head, arms, and trunk to the waist. Because the hand is considered target, the guard is half rounded to protect the fingers. Due to the fact that saber is a cutting weapon it is the fastest out of the three weapons. Like foil, sabre uses the convention of right-of-way to determine priority.

Lenght: 88 cm Weight: up to 500 gm.
